A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these national projects.
