A Denmark-based man has been convicted of sharing nude segments from protected movies and television shows on the social media platform Reddit.

Based on a law enforcement document reviewed by media outlets, the unnamed man posted 347 clips of nude scenes in a subreddit he managed, which were then watched 4.2 million-plus times.

The country's authorities confirm he has been given a seven-month deferred sentence for violating copyright laws.

Legal analysts say the defendant was charged under a seldom-invoked clause in Danish intellectual property legislation, with the court ruling that by removing the footage out of their intended setting, the accused had damaged the artists' "ethical entitlements".

He has additionally been convicted of sharing more than 25 terabytes of protected data.

From March 2022 to mid-2023, the man using the alias "KlammereFyr" on Reddit uploaded sexually explicit scenes including over 100 female performers.

He distributed them in the subreddit he was a moderator of.

Per the Danish copyright protection group The Rights Alliance (TRA), his online community had more than 6,000 subscribers and participants were encouraged to request clips of particular actors.

In 2023, campaigners reported the case to the authorities on behalf of the affected artists, filmmakers and production companies, which resulted in the forum being closed down.

Andrea Vagn Jensen, one of the performers whose explicit content were shared in the community, told local broadcasters at the period she felt there was a difference between appearing naked in a movie and appearing on Reddit.

The actress stated the uploads amounted to "abuse".

'A significant message'

The man was detained in fall 2024 and pleaded culpable to the allegations recently.

In a statement after the ruling, the head of the Rights Alliance Maria Fredenslund said the outcome sent an "important" message "indicating infringements of artists' rights have repercussions".

The ruling is viewed as unprecedented in Denmark for its use of the "ethical protections" section of the Danish Copyright Act, which specifies an artist's work cannot be utilized in a way which infringes upon their standing.

Copyright law specialist Dr Alina Trapova informed BBC News the case was "unusual" for its focus on the damage to the integrity of an artist, rather than to them economically.

How the ruling could influence nations abroad is unclear.

But she said there may be "more and more of these actions" in the future with the advancement of AI, where "the sanctity of one's creative output might be compromised with greater ease".
