England's Assistant Coach Shares The Approach: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

A decade ago, the England assistant coach was playing for Accrington Stanley. Now, his attention is fixed to assist the head coach secure World Cup glory in 2026. His path from the pitch to the sidelines began through volunteering coaching youngsters. He recalls, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he was hooked. He realized his calling.

Staggering Ascent

Barry's progression stands out. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a name with creative training and strong interpersonal abilities. His roles at clubs included elite sides, and he held roles with national teams across multiple countries. His players include big names such as top footballers. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the top as he describes it.

“Dreams are the starting point … However, I hold that dedication shifts obstacles. You dream big but then you bring it down: ‘What's the process, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. We have to build a methodical process so we can for optimal success.”

Focus on Minutiae

Passion, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour all the time, they both test boundaries. Their methods involve mental assessments, a plan for hot conditions for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. He stresses “Team England” and rejects terms like “international break”.

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a pause,” Barry says. “We needed to create an environment that attracts the squad and where they're challenged that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Driven Leaders

He characterizes himself along with the manager as extremely driven. “Our goal is to master all parts of the match,” he declares. “We seek to command every metre of the pitch and we dedicate long hours toward. We must not just to keep up of the trends but to surpass them and create our own ones. It’s a constant process focused on finding solutions. And to simplify complexity.

“We get 50 days together with the team before the World Cup finals. We need to execute a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly during that time. We need to progress from idea to information to knowledge to execution.

“To develop a process enabling productivity during the limited time, we have to use the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. During periods without the team, we have to build relationships among them. It's essential to invest time on the phone with them, observing them live, feel them, touch them. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”

Upcoming Matches

The coach is focusing ahead of the concluding matches of World Cup qualifiers – against Serbia at Wembley and in Albania. The team has secured their place at the finals by winning all six games and six clean sheets. Yet, no let-up is planned; instead. Now is the moment to build on the team's style, for further momentum.

“The manager and I agree that our playing approach should represent all the positives from the top division,” he comments. “The athleticism, the versatility, the strength, the honesty. The Three Lions kit must be difficult to earn but comfortable to have on. It should feel like a cape not protective gear.

“For it to feel easy, it's crucial to offer a system that lets them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They must be stuck less in thinking and increase execution.

“You can gain psychological edges for managers in attack and defense – playing out from the back, attacking high up. Yet, in the central zone of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Coaches have extensive data now. They can organize – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are really trying to focus on accelerating the game in that central area.”

Passion for Progress

The coach's thirst to get better knows no bounds. While training for the top coaching badge, he was worried about the presentation, since his group contained luminaries including former players. So, to build his skill set, he sought out tough situations available to him to practise giving them. Such as Walton jail locally, and he trained detainees for a training session.

Barry graduated as the best in his year, and his research paper – about dead-ball situations, for which he analysed numerous set-plays – got into print. Lampard included won over and he brought Barry on to his staff at Stamford Bridge. When Frank was fired, it was telling that the team dismissed nearly all assistants but not Barry.

Lampard’s successor at Chelsea took over, within months, they secured European glory. When he was let go, Barry stayed on with Potter. However, when Tuchel returned with Bayern, he recruited Barry away from London and back alongside him. The Football Association see them as a double act akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
