Israelis mark two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Gaza peace negotiations advance
Israelis have gathered around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted assault on October 7th, 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The attack saw in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most fatal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel reacted by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"The bloodthirsty adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the leader stated on that day.
He also pledged to "realize all the goals of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".
Memorial Gatherings Across Israel
The Israeli government delayed formal commemorations until mid-October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still occurred across the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was televised throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas delegations met in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the proposal.
A high-ranking Palestinian official knowledgeable about the negotiations indicated that an evening round of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The source stated the earlier meeting finished without significant progress, due to disagreements over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not recommence hostilities after the opening period of the deal.
He added that the discussions are "difficult and have yet to achieve any real breakthrough," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to reduce the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Essential Points in Discussions
- A permanent ceasefire
- The swap of the captives still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies distribution
- Future management of the territory
Civilian Feeling
In the city's Hostages Square earlier, young a woman - whose family member lived through the attack on the gathering, where hundreds were murdered and dozens more were captured by Hamas militants - told: "No place feels like home anymore and until all the hostages return not a single person will be secure."
"After we see all home returned, we can feel relief once more. Then we can start to rebuild," she added.
In front of the leader's residence in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their solidarity for the families of the hostages. Israel reports 48 stay in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be alive.
Protester Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do every compromise required for the abducted to come back home. But we really want assurances that we will be safe."
Surveys now consistently show that around 70% of Israeli citizens want the war to end in return for the liberation of the hostages.
Palestinian Conditions
At the site of Nova festival, grieving people gathered to pay their respects.
From the site, the noise of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people reported the severe Israeli bombardment carried on.
In the main city, attacks were noted in the dawn of that day in the west side neighborhood, sector and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"When the dusk arrives, the dread comes with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli air strike earlier, explained.
"Me and my three children are terrified of the attacks. All the night we are resting together, holding each other, notably my smallest child who places his head on me all night."
"Constantly we look at the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be achieved and that the fighting will come back to us."
Medical Crisis
The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had taken in the remains of half dozen people by the daytime, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern area.
Nasser hospital in the south region of that area indicated additional dead people had been transported. An individual was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for assistance to the south, health workers stated.
