Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”

New York police shared surveillance images earlier this week of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims were reported.

The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday near the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
