Sir Gareth Southgate has stated that he is not pursuing a return to football management, noting that it would be tough to recreate the unique sense of purpose he felt as England’s manager.

Southgate expressed his plan to focus his energy toward supporting the next generation and combating what he labeled a widespread pessimistic outlook presently existing in the country.

Embracing Different Paths Outside of Football

During a broadcast discussion, the manager was questioned on speculation linking him with vacant management roles in the top flight and other leagues.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he responded. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

Commitment to Positive Examples

Ahead of the release of his upcoming book, his new work on leadership, Southgate stated that he is deeply committed about providing role models for teenagers, drawing on insights from his period as England’s men’s football manager between 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

The leader believes that his experience managing the squad, during which the team shifted from being deeply unpopular to broadly loved, holds general lessons.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he explained. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Family Life and Guiding Young People

Speaking from his experience as a father, Southgate observed: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He added: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”

Unity Over Discord

The former manager asserted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the public discourse often centers on disagreement.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he stated. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”

Southgate’s upcoming publication, titled Dear England, is set to offer deeper reflections on management and national identity drawn from his remarkable time in football.
