The Grisly Cartoon Film Conclusion That Haunts Viewers
Out of every mature cartoon movies I’ve personally watched, nothing has stuck with me as much as the dread-soaked conclusion of a viscerally violent and deeply subversive film from 2022 The Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, the Spanish filmmaker crafted a dark, bleak and frequently brutal world with a few small , forlorn glimmers of hope.
While Unicorn Wars feels like it came from a desire to advance the medium even more, the director clarified that it was rather an attempt to express a universal, cross-cultural message about “the mutual source of each battle.”
This theme is expressed by means of a squad of vividly colored bears , obviously modeled after a popular series of lovable figures.
Growing up in a community built around warmongering and the military-industrial complex, many of these animals are obsessed with exterminating the mythical beasts, thanks to a sacred text which states them they previously were kings of the woods, until these creatures forced them out.
Some did not entirely accepted the propaganda, , choose to experiment with narcotics or engage sexually in the forest.
In contrast to their cuddly equivalents, these vivid animals display sexual organs and clear urges.
For one notably brutal, cynical bear, the character Bluey, the conflict with the unicorns transforms into a path toward dominance — and particularly to supremacy over his gentler, more compassionate sibling the character Tubby.
This bear acts as a tormentor , a seeming psychopath , and when horror takes over his unit and kills his teammates individually, he seizes progressively power on his own behalf, in increasingly bloody, destructive ways.
At the same time, the unicorns are experiencing their own terror, through a spreading, deadly beast in their habitat.
“Initially, it appears as a humorous movie,” the director said. “Yet it evolves into a more serious and sorrowful movie. And ultimately, it transforms into a horror film.”
Unicorn Wars begins similar to one of the more whimsical movies by an iconic filmmaker, that uncover a wicked pleasure in letting cartoon characters curse, fire weapons, or sex each other up.
Then it turns into closer to a darker film from the same director, featuring progressively graphic violence , a tangible connection to the real horror of battle.
In the finale, it becomes a full-on extreme drama massacre.
The horror that turns this a perfect Halloween watch begins a lot earlier than indicated.
The Unicorn Wars is ideal for the devoted lovers of violence, for lovers of intense movies who want to view a movie they have not seen on-screen before, and who can handle a plot which delivers no restraint.
See it with the lights off with no disturbances, and the conclusion will crawl under your skin and linger.
