UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a girl harboring multiple human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate personas, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a creepy hospital, while other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."
The central mechanic revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
